do you know what's between you and the sky?

how to get better shots of famous spots

landmark love

Completing the trio of top tips for selecting a location to watch a sunrise or sunset (the other two being by water or high up - check out those editions by clicking the links), this fortnight’s ‘the sunrise chaser’ covers landmarks. Places of note. Tourist Attractions. It’s all about putting an iconic, well-known or even just a compelling point of interest between you and the sunrise or sunset sky.

This creates not just a beautiful sky picture, but an elevated view of famous locations.

As you may know, I live in Sydney, Australia where we have a couple of famous tourist attractions (namely a bridge and an opera house). Both stick out into the harbour, so depending on which side of the landmarks you stand you will either get an epic sunrise or sunset view point (should the other markers of a good sunrise/sunset be applicable).

I’d love to hear about your favourite sunrise or sunset spots including landmarks.

predicting tip

Here is where I’ll share an additional or new tip to help with your sunrise and sunset chasing.

Before heading to a new city or location, research sunrise or sunset images for that place. If you find them on a blog more than likely they will reveal the exact spot the image was taken from

Inspiration to improve your dedication

sky of the fortnight

The inspiration for this fortnight’s theme came from a trip I took with Sydney By Kayak on their sunrise harbour tour. My mum had been visiting Sydney for the past few weeks so for her last day we got up at 4am, booked a car to North Sydney and experienced the sun coming up from the water whilst looking back at the city’s best landmarks.

where to visit?

When I visited Sri Lanka a few years ago I was still fairly new to sunrise and sunset chasing, but I did occasionally make the effort to get out to see some skies. One such was in the capital, Colombo, where one of the famous sunset spots is just a simple pier jutting out into the ocean. Check out my blog post below which talks about this spot as well as other highlights from this magnificent country. One place I certainly want to revisit.

out the window

Whenever I travel somewhere I am often looking for places to stay that have a unique or mind-blowing view.

With Paris, France being one of the most famous cities on earth, I had to include the hotel I stayed in during my short visit this year. I had seen this on TikTok and through a careful bit of planning (i.e. emailing the reception in French a few weeks before) managed to secure this room with a stunning view of the Eiffel Tower. The hotel has several brackets of rooms and ones with the Eiffel Tower view either come with a balcony, but tower view from the side, or just a window - like this one below. The place is called Les Jardins D’Eiffel and is well worth checking out.

Disclaimer: I did actually include this in my first newsletter, but it fitted so perfectly with this theme.

sky chaser kit bag

Items that can help you be a better sky chaser.

What better way to plot your landmark locations than a coffee table book profiling the best the world has to offer? I found this on Booktopia and though I’ve not read it yet think it would be worth a look. I reckon if I did read it, my ‘to travel to’ list would almost triple.

bucket list

Sunrise and sunset spots from around the world I’m desperate to visit. Drop me an email (reply to this) to share your favourites for the chance to be featured. This is also a great way for me to highlight other wonderful creators you may want to follow.

sunrise spot

One of the OG landmarks, Stonehenge near Salisbury, UK is an iconic sunrise destination for the ages. Built around around 3000 BC to 2000 BC, this place is still a sight of pilgrimage, especially around the summer and winter solstices.

sunset spot

Marvel at the sky and the incredible architecture of Barcelona, Spain by watching the sunset from the landmark Park Güell.

blame it on the moon

On the 28th of October, the full moon will rise in the earth sign of Taurus. You can use this website to confirm the best time to view it this month wherever you are, plus the days on either side could be worth looking out for too.

Thanks for reading this ‘landmark’ 5th edition of ‘the sunrise chaser’. I hope you’ve been inspired to show up at sunrise or sunset to a landmark during your next trip away. If you do, don’t forget to tag me on Instagram or TikTok as I love to see your videos/photos.

Happy sky chasing.
