how's your view from up there?

looking down on the world below

up in the air

In this edition of ‘The Sunrise Chaser’ we will be sky-high celebrating incredible views from high above. Planes, tall buildings and mountains, anywhere that’s furthest from the ground are where we’ll go. One of the best ways to watch a sunrise or sunset is somewhere high up, so today we’ll have our heads in the clouds as we explore the great expanse.

Last weekend a delayed flight, which initially irritated me ended up being the reason I was able to see a wonderful sunset coming into land over Sydney. From the inconvenience came the beauty. This inspired the fortnight’s newsletter and so I went on the hunt for all sorts of themed places that should be of interest for a sky chaser like you.

Do you have a favourite spot to watch sunrise and sunset that is high up or do you prefer to keep your feet on the ground?

predicting tip

Here is where I’ll share an additional or new tip to help with your sunrise and sunset chasing.

Depending on how high up you are the sunrise and sunset time might be slightly different as you’ll have a further view out over the horizon

Here is the aforementioned sunset from the plane coming into land over Sydney Harbour. I got very lucky being on the side of the plane looking west for the majority of the descent into Kingsford Smith airport.

where to visit?

Want to watch the sunrise from the best hot air balloon location on earth? The otherwordly spot of Cappadocia in Türkiye has a Star Wars-like landscape that is Instagram-famous for its daily balloon flights - it’s an experience worth adding to your bucket list. Due to bad weather when I went, my only option was a daytime flight but still, the skies and views were incredible. Read about this and the best things to do in the area below.

out the window

Whenever I travel somewhere I am often looking for places to stay that have a unique or mind-blowing view.

Waking up to a view over Bangkok from the St Regis Hotel was the perfect way to spend the single day I had in the Thai capital on my way back to Australia this summer. Looking out over the many skyscrapers that dot the urban sprawl they were complimented with a wonderful colourful sky. The hotel also has a bar overlooking the adjacent golf course which has wonderful sunset views.

sunrise spot

This is a must-visit destination even without the lure of a sunrise, but Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro looks like a magnificent place to welcome in a new day.

sunset spot

A rooftop bar is an unmatched way to round out your day. When looking for one to include in today’s newsletter I came across Loggia Roof Bar at the Hotel Palazzo Guadagni in Italy’s beautiful city of Florence. Take in the historic sights as you enjoy aperitivo and snap away at the view before you.

blame it on the moon

The 28th-29th of October will be prime time to see a full or almost full moon this month. Just ahead of Halloween, the moon will be in the bullish sign of Taurus. Find out when the full moon will be for your location using this website.

Above all else, I hope that you have a great two weeks sky-chasing. If you’ve not joined, there is a broadcast channel on Instagram where people from around the world share their sunrise and sunset images with me and I post them on there. It’s so fascinating to see all sorts of different locations globally. It’s on my Instagram page if you’re keen to join the crew.
