bucket list sunset spot in tokyo

sunset in the land of the rising sun

Back in April, I shared an update on my challenge to find the world’s best sunrise and sunset locations. Within this, I included a bucket list sunset spot from Tokyo, Japan - which at the time I had no clue I would be visiting just three months later.

Shibuya Sky sits atop the 46th floor of the Shibuya Scramble Square Tower and has become TikTok viral due to its dual escalators that look over the cityscape below. On my way back to Australia from Europe this year, I was able to spend two nights in Tokyo - though as a first-time visitor to Japan, it was not even close to being enough time - and once I had locked in the flights my first port of call was ensuring I got a ticket for one of the best sunset places on earth.

Earlier this month I made it to Shibuya Sky, located in the heart of the city, and by some serendipitous planning, I was delivered a wonderful sundowner view.

Below are some tips if you’re planning on going to this incredible location.

Now I’ve sold the spot to you, here are a few tips for visiting:

  • You’ll need to buy tickets in advance, they almost always sell out on the day.

  • Whilst the view is spectacular day and night, sunset is when it really comes alive.

  • To secure a ticket the best approach is to buy online from this link or you can get on Klook (with 10% off using code DWAROUNDTHEWORLDKLOOK).

  • Tickets go on sale at midnight Tokyo time four weeks before. You need to be on the site at this time to have any hope of getting sunset tickets.

  • Before this familiarise yourself with the website as it’s written in Japanese (though can translate).

  • If, like me, you can’t get tickets for sunset time, despite being on the site in time, then aim for the latest time you can get hold of that’s not past sunset time.

  • There is no time limit on how long you can spend there. There is a covered floor under the rooftop with a restaurant, shop and seating areas. So if you can’t get a good time slot then you can wait around.

  • Check what time sunset will be during your trip here.

  • You’re not allowed to take anything up on the roof except phones and cameras, so have a 100 yen coin ready for the lockers.

  • The rooftop will get shut in bad weather, but as you’ll have to book in advance there is no way to predict this four weeks ahead of time. So it can just be luck!

blame it on the moon

Did you catch July’s Buck Moon? If not, the next full moon is on 20th August (and the days around it) and it’ll be a supermoon. This will give you the best chance to see the best moonrises. It’ll be in the airy sign of Aquarius, this website to plan which days the moon will be full where you are.

Here is the gorgeous July moon:
