are you ready to live like a local?

a beach getaway should never be too far away

beach towns to reverse frowns

Welcome back to ‘The Sunrise Chaser’, this fortnight I am writing to you from Cebu airport in the glorious Philippines. I’ve been in the country for four days now and have already fallen in love - stay tuned for a special edition dedicated to travelling the country as a first-timer coming soon. If there is anything in particular you want to know, do drop me a dm on Instagram.

In the meantime, I was lucky enough to stay at a gorgeous house located on the beach front of a small town an hour south of Sydney. This inspired this edition which is based around beach towns. Whether you’re lucky enough to live in one or you make the point of visiting for a holiday - getting away from the hustle and bustle of a big city to integrate with the locals as they go about their daily lives on the coast is always a good idea. From weekends away to extended stays, I believe spending time breathing in the salty air and hearing crashing waves is the best way to relax.

Here is some inspiration for your next seaside getaway.

predicting tip

Here is where I’ll share an additional or new tip to help with your sunrise and sunset chasing.

Knowing which direction a beach/coastal town faces has never been more vital. If the town looks out east then you can start planning sunrises, if west then sunsets and if north or south then you’ll get a bit of both

Inspiration to improve your dedication

sky of the fortnight

Coledale, the town I mentioned up top, is an east-facing beach location where the sunrise beamed into the accommodation I was staying in. Staying this close to the water meant not having to factor in an early start as the distance from bed to sunrise was a few steps rather than an Uber ride.

sunrise on a coastal getaway. visited this lovely spot in coledale nsw. thanks to @Getawayz NSW for the stay

where to visit?

My wonderful friend Lucy from The Literary Edit features a write-up of a bookish sojourn to Watergate Bay in the English county of Cornwall. Close to the popular resort town of Newquay, Lucy and her mum stayed at a stunning hotel, took part in surfing lessons and noshed down on croissants at breakfast. You can read all about this very British escape below.

out the window

Whenever I travel somewhere I am often looking for places to stay that have a unique or mind-blowing view.

I’m not going to lie to you, usually I feature a hotel I’ve stayed in, however, this spot in northern NSW’s Cabarita Beach is somewhere that’s long been on my ‘i need to bl**dy well stay here at least once in my life’ list. Halcyon House looks positively Greek themed with its blue and white exterior, inside, however, it gives a slickly curated luxury-rustic feel. Best of all, it’s mere metres from the sands and has a refreshing pool. I also reckon, though I’d have to stay there to validate (!), that it would have an excellent sunrise view.

Items that can help you be a better sky chaser.

Every good beach escape needs to have two things, food and drink. Keep them in top condition with this insulated beach basket, or as the Australians say Esky.

bucket list

Sunrise and sunset spots from around the world I’m desperate to visit. Drop me an email (reply to this) to share your favourites for the chance to be featured. This is also a great way for me to highlight other wonderful creators you may want to follow.

sunrise spot

Widely agreed to be the best sunrise spot in the whole of the USA state of Delaware, this fortnight we’re popping Rehoboth Beach onto the bucket list. The town features a boardwalk lined with hotels, shops and restaurants with a population of just over 1,000. Sounds like bliss.

sunset spot

Check out this Autumnal sunset over the surfing town of Biarritz in France’s Basque coast. It became popular after being a favourite of European royalty from times gone by, now the locals battle it our to be crowned King or Queen of the waves.

blame it on the moon

The 27th of this month (November if you’re not counting) will see the next full moon. You may want to check it out the day before and/or the day after, depending on where you’re located. It will be in the tricksy sign of Gemini and you can use this website to confirm the best time to view it this month wherever you are. If you missed the previous edition of this newsletter, it has loads of tips for moonrises, you can catch up here.

If you’re not already planning your next beach side escape after this then I need to work harder for the next edition. I hope this has given you some ideas for a relaxing retreat to the ocean.

Until next time, I wish you amazing skies and visible full moons
