in need of a tart at sunset?
why you'll be pondering portugal for your next trip
pastel de nata and how to love the sunset side of europe.
Though a country doesn’t really face one way or another, for who is to say which is the right way to face, I would still say that Portugal is a west-facing country. This is due to its coastline being predominantly out to the west - the Atlantic Ocean.
A long-time favourite of travellers, this edition of ‘The Sunrise Chaser’ will be delving into the coastal country to explore the best it has to offer. Visitors mainly flock to this Iberian country for its food and wine, but don’t be sleeping on those views.
We’ll have the usual hotel suggestion, sunrise and sunset spot, as well as an update on the next full moon. Read below to get some inspo for this unforgettable country.
predicting tip
Here is where I’ll share an additional or new tip to help with your sunrise and sunset chasing.
To find decent sunrise and/or sunset spots use Instagram or TikTok’s search functions (i.e. ‘Lisbon sunset’) and check out the locations tagged in the videos you like the look of.

sky of the fortnight
When I said Portugal did sunsets, I was not joking. @andginja captured this stunning drone footage of sunset over the ocean at Costa da Caparica, located in the region of Setúbal.

where to visit?
Visiting the Portuguese capital twice in one year occurred due to work commitments gave me time to discover some of the magical sunset spots, plus the delicious food, Lisbon has to offer. Read about my trip below.
out the window
Whenever I travel somewhere I am often looking for places to stay that have a unique or mind-blowing view.
Not Madeira’s first feature in this newsletter and, likely, won’t be the last due to its ever-increasing popularity. The Saccharum Resort in Arco da Calheta has a sensational sunset view from its infinity pool. You’ll see why @talesfromthetarmac_ called this spot ‘breathtaking’.

Items that can help you be a better sky chaser.
Can’t get hold of the viral Octobuddy but want a suitable alternative? I got you. This substitute is just as good, I got it when the Octobuddy wasn’t available in Australia - it is now but the price point is $120…! If you don’t know what it is, it’s a suction stick-on that affixes to the back of your phone so you can stick it to most shiny surfaces. It makes taking selfies and other content a breeze, without the need to crack out a tripod. It’ll free up your hands to have a tart in both of them.
bucket list
Sunrise and sunset spots from around the world I’m desperate to visit. Drop me an email (reply to this) to share your favourites for the chance to be featured. This is also a great way for me to highlight other wonderful creators you may want to follow.
sunrise spot
It doesn’t look like the most relaxing of sunrise spots, but if you’re happy to dodge the kick-ons (or join them) then Matosinhos Beach in Porto looks like a beautiful sun up spot. You’ll mainly be getting a reverse sunrise (where you’re watching the sky on ‘the other side’ to the sunrise) but it looks vibey nonetheless. @ellenapper5 headed here for the afterparty and was treated to a pastel (not de nata) delight.

sunset spot
The coast of Cabo de Sao Vicente, on Portugal’s southwest tip, will deliver some sunsets that will make you forget yourself for a moment. Rock up with a classic pastel de nata in hand to finally live out your tart-at-sunset dreams.

blame it on the moon
21st July will see the next full moon appear in the sky (though the moon is always full and it’s just we can’t see all of it). A few things to remember - you can get good views on the days on either side of this, your specific location on earth will determine which day is best for viewing, and you really want a cloudless sky to give optimal perspective. This website can help you plan your moonrise viewing.
