have you seen the midnight sun?

places where the sun never sets

perpetual daylight

During the summer months, there are places on this earth where for a short time of the year the sun never sets. In the month of June in the far north and then December in the far south, the sun never goes down.

Countries like Iceland, Finland, Canada and Norway, not to mention the continent of Antarctica, are just some of the places that experience 24/7 daylight for a portion of the year.

In this edition of “The Sunrise Chaser” we’ll look at some of the best midnight sun viewing spots to fuel your wanderlust and perhaps put some new destinations on your bucket list for 2025.

predicting tip

Here is where I’ll share an additional or new tip to help with your sunrise and sunset chasing.

The maximium length of time you’ll see sunrise and sunset colours varies location to location. Places that have the midnight sun can have incredible colours for hours.

sky of the fortnight

Norway’s Lofoten Islands have a natural beauty which looks stunning any time of the year, however, @nattdoesart captured the area looking particularly stunning this week under the midnight sun.

where to visit?

North Finland is one of the best places to experience the midnight sun. Below Pippa McCarthy from Best Served Scandinavia takes a journey through Arctic Lakeland to experience the country’s bears, saunas, hikes and, of course, especially long sunsets.

out the window

Whenever I travel somewhere I am often looking for places to stay that have a unique or mind-blowing view.

Arctic Bath in Sweden is the perfect wellness retreat to visit in either the depths of Winter or the height of Summer. In the summer months, you’ll get to experience never-ending daytime along with, hopefully, some gorgeous sky displays. Check out the video below where @headmedincharge takes us through the ins and outs of the unique spot.

Everyone always asks how people sleep in these places when it’s light all the time. Everywhere seems to be set up for it with black-out blinds and other modifications, but this handy light-blocking eye mask may come in handy when visiting the midnight sun.

sunrise spot midnight sun spot #1

As technically places that experience the midnight sun don’t get sunrise and sunset, it all just blurs into one with the sun never dropping below the horizon, here are two of the best spots on earth to witness the midnight sun.

First up is from my own trip to Iceland where a trip to the northernmost town in the country had me witness this glorious view at a place called ‘Arctic Henge’.

sunset spot midnight sun spot #2

It might be almost midnight on Canada’s Yukon River, but the sun is still in the sky and the vibes are unmatched. Here @roi_agapito takes a paddle down the river for an unforgettable evening.

blame it on the moon

The 21st of July will be the next full moon and it will be another moon in goaty Capricorn. Check out this website to plan your moonrise watching and the days each side of the full moon should have decent views - providing there is limited cloud in the sky.

Have you ever experienced the midnight sun? Are you planning a trip one day to see it? Drop me a comment through the link below to share where or DM me on Instagram as I love to hear from you.

Until next time, happy midnight sun chasing
