are you looking for a cloudless sky?

when the sky clears

no more clouds left to see

When starting sunrise, or sunset, chasing, a lot of people believe that the best skies are those where there are no clouds in the sky. What is often not understood right away is that the light from the sun needs something to reflect off - hence why we always want a sky with some clouds on it when the sun passes the horizon. Here at ‘The Sunrise Chaser’ we are forever espousing the importance of high and medium-cloud skies for the best sunrises and sunsets. There are occasions when a cloudless sky can bring about a softer, muted and pastel canvas that lots of people prefer.

In this edition, we’ll laud cloudless skies - because all skies deserve to be celebrated.

predicting tip

Here is where I’ll share an additional or new tip to help with your sunrise and sunset chasing.

Often the best thing to do when the sky has no clouds is to not look towards the sunrise/sunset but to the opposite where you may be lucky to find gorgeous pastel colours.

Inspiration to improve your dedication

sky of the fortnight

Inspiring this fortnight’s theme is a pastel sunset that place during a cloudless sky at an almost full moonrise last month. I took to the ocean with my water housing to capture a ‘closer’ view of the moon. This is Sydney, Australia’s Coogee Beach.

where to visit?

The iconic Sahara Desert is known as one of the places on Earth where there is seldom any cloud. Below Lauren from Never Ending Footsteps takes us on a journey to visit the captivating landscape, starting in Marrakech, that includes sunsets and sunrises. Read about her sandy adventures below and get ready to add another item to your bucket list.

out the window

Whenever I travel somewhere I am often looking for places to stay that have a unique or mind-blowing view.

As deserts are known for not having much cloud cover compared to other areas of this planet, here’s another sand-based suggestion. What better way to go to sleep and wake up happy than this bedroom in the middle of Namibia? Looking like a vessel that landed on Mars this gorgeous place is somewhere you’ll be desperate to stay at, called Onduli Ridge.

sky chaser kit bag

Items that can help you be a better sky chaser.

A freebie in this month’s kit bag is the go-to app for sunrise and sunset chasers. Clear Outside gives you an overview of the cloud cover (among other things) based on your location. Whilst it’s not always 100% correct, it is a great way to start getting a better sense of when will be a great sunrise and when not. Planning on a clear sky, look for only zeros.

bucket list

Sunrise and sunset spots from around the world I’m desperate to visit. Drop me an email (reply to this) to share your favourites for the chance to be featured. This is also a great way for me to highlight other wonderful creators you may want to follow.

sunrise spot

If you climb high enough you can rise above the clouds and watch the sunrise - like this mind-blowing experience in Nevado Yanapaccha, Peru.

sunset spot

An extremely popular sunset spot in the famous city of Barcelona, Spain. Weather the crowds and enjoy awesome views over the city from The Bunkers.

blame it on the moon

The next full moon will be in the sign of Libra and takes place on 25th March, meaning both 24th and 25th should be good evenings to watch the moonrise. Here’s hoping you get cloudless skies for both those nights and can enjoy the celestial show.

If this hasn’t blown those clouds away then nothing will. Not every sunrise and sunset needs to be a sensationally colourful one, there is beauty in the subtle as I hope this has shown.

Until next time wishing you all epic sky-chasing
