do you get a better view down south?

why you'll want to autumn in the southern hemisphere

life upside down

It is Autumn in the southern hemisphere and if you didn’t know, this is the season that is statistically the best for sunrises and sunsets - anywhere in the world. During this time, the sun's angle relative to the Earth changes, resulting in longer periods of twilight.

So in today’s editions of ‘The Sunrise Chaser’ we’ll be celebrating the ‘bottom half’ of the world. With less well-known countries and a smaller amount of land mass than its up top sibling, the southern hemisphere is defined by its tropical climates, ocean currents and unique wildlife. So, without further ado, let’s take a look down below for the world’s best.

predicting tip

Here is where I’ll share an additional or new tip to help with your sunrise and sunset chasing.

The length of sunrise and sunset colours will vary from location to location and depends on the time of year. Some places will, on avergae, have quicker colour bursts than others.

sky of the fortnight

I’m based in the largest country in the southern hemisphere - Australia - and nowhere is there better to welcome in the new day than on Coogee Beach in the harbour city of Sydney. I took to the water on this morning to capture the changing colours of the sky from the water.

where to visit?

One of the most popular holiday destinations in all of the southern hemisphere is the Indonesian island of Bali. It has some of the most incredible sunsets you’ll ever see and I’ve included a few suggestions in the blog post linked below. In there you’ll also find some food spots and places to stay to keep you occupied in between sun movements.

out the window

Whenever I travel somewhere I am often looking for places to stay that have a unique or mind-blowing view.

Speaking of Bali its next-door neighbour is the lesser known, but equally as beautiful, Lombok. With so many island paradise hotels and resorts to choose from the Makalele Dome Villas is a two-for-one with a gorgeous sunset view and unique accommodation.

Items that can help you be a better sky chaser.

Early mornings often call for coffee, and if you like to save on disposables whilst you’re at it then these delightful keep-cups from the esteemed ‘Pottery for the Planet’ are just for you. They come in a huge range of different designs and I am forever getting compliments about the gorgeous sage green one I use. They come in a variety of sizes also so you can get one to suit your coffee preference.

bucket list

Sunrise and sunset spots from around the world I’m desperate to visit. Drop me an email (reply to this) to share your favourites for the chance to be featured. This is also a great way for me to highlight other wonderful creators you may want to follow.

sunrise spot

A stunning rock formation in Australia’s largest state - Western Australia - is home to one of the most epic sunrise views you’ll ever see. Would you take a trip on the Granite Skywalk at Castle Rock?

@cambostock

This spot is INSANE 🔥 #australia #travel #perth #travelbucketlist #castlerock

sunset spot

Cape Town, South Africa is one of the most incredible places to visit, and the best spot in all of the city is Camps Bay. Head here to catch the sunset after a day of sightseeing.

blame it on the moon

The April Scorpio Full Moon, occurring on the 23rd or 24th (depending on your location), offers prime viewing opportunities for moonrise from the 23rd to the 25th (again contingent upon your global position). Utilising this website for precise calculations, optimal moonrise vistas align with sunset times, both before and after, ensuring an enchanting celestial display.

Where are your favourite spots in the Southern Hemisphere? I love to hear from you about places you enjoy visiting at sunrise and/or sunset. Drop me a comment using the link below.
