Often people think that the only way to see a good sunrise or sunset, is by going to the beach. As you may have seen from previous iterations of ‘The Sunrise Chaser’ that is not the case, you can see amazing skies from almost anywhere - however, when it comes to the best type of places to watch often you’re able to see some incredible skies when you head towards the ocean.

It’s with that in mind that in this edition we’ll be celebrating the obvious, greatest and most celebrated places to watch sunrise and/or sunset - the beach.

Whether you live on the beach, close by or miles from, there will be something for everyone in here to inspire your wanderlust and hopefully galvanize your next sunrise or sunset chase.

Sydney, Australia woke up to the best sunrise the city has had in a long while on Thursday morning. Treated to a long and vivid colour show, the below will give you just a taste of what those lucky enough to be at Coogee Beach in the city’s east experienced.

where to visit?

The wonderful Benota Beach in Sri Lanka is a gorgeous spot to take in the sunset. I was lucky enough to visit back in 2019 and experienced a magical evening with locals and tourists alike on the sands. Below, read up on the area with this blog post from Nerd Nomads.

Whenever I travel somewhere I am often looking for places to stay that have a unique or mind-blowing view.

Thailand is pretty famous for its incredible views, and this hotel on the island of Koh Lanta has a beautiful sunset view right outside. Twin Lotus has rooms set slightly back from the beach with several swimming pools and a beachfront restaurant. Check out the magnificent sight that greeted me on arrival when I stayed here last year.

Kanyakumari Beach is situated on the tip of India. It’s known as a place where ‘three seas’ converge - the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean. I couldn’t find any professional pictures of this spot at sunrise on social, but it looks absolutely incredible and is somewhere I will now have to have on my sunrise spots bucket list.

The world-famous Santa Monica in Los Angeles, USA is a west coast destination with a beautiful sunset view. The pier makes the video and photo opportunities even better.

blame it on the moon

you’ve probably just seen the full moon from January, but February’s is ready to pop into your calendar. On the 24th of the month (depending on where you live) the full moon will appear in the particular sign of Virgo. You can use this website to confirm the best time to view it next month wherever you are.
