movie magic: sunrise and sunset

Today is May the fourth (or for some of you tomorrow will be, and for some of you, opening this late, it’s been and gone), but yes that well-known date that’s a favourite of film fanatics for its ‘Star Wars’ pun (“May the Force Be With You” = “May the Fourth Be With You”).

We’ve also only just had April 25th, plucked from mild obscurity and thrust into the limelight thanks to ‘Miss Congeniality’. All this movie action got me thinking about locations and so this edition of ‘The Sunrise Chaser’ is all about famous movie places.

We’ll ‘visit’ some of the best movie locations at sunrise and sunset, getting our fix of epic views and movie moves with these epic places.

Don’t forget to stay till the end where you can submit your favourite ‘on film’ location.

predicting tip

Here is where I’ll share an additional or new tip to help with your sunrise and sunset chasing.

If you planning a trip to a world famous sunrise spot, aim to visit in summer as the sunrise will be much earlier and therefore they’ll be fewer crowds around

sky of the fortnight

Usually, this is where I’ll share an aptly themed video of mine from the past two weeks, but since I’ve not been anywhere film-located this fortnight, here is the gorgeous Namib Desert in Nambia. This was featured in one of my favourite films - Mad Max: Fury Road, and it looks even more incredible from the sky at sunset. Thanks to the creator @nina.legath for sharing.

where to visit?

Cambodia is still very much an up-and-coming travel destination. Sandwiched in between its more popular Southeast Asian siblings Thailand and Vietnam, it’s less frequented but equally as glorious. The jewel in the country’s crown are the temples Angkor just outside the city of Siem Reap. It has several locations featured in ‘Tomb Raider’ and is an epic place for sunrise and sunset. An itinerary from travel duo Where to Flow explains more:

out the window

Whenever I travel somewhere I am often looking for places to stay that have a unique or mind-blowing view.

I’ve covered this one before, but for a hotel movie location with an epic sunrise view I just had to include the beautiful ‘Sound of Music’ featured spot of Schloss Leopoldskron in Salzburg, Austria. I recently posted all about this magical place to stay and you can experience the full story below.

Sunrise and sunset spots from around the world I’m desperate to visit. Drop me an email (reply to this) to share your favourites for the chance to be featured. This is also a great way for me to highlight other wonderful creators you may want to follow.

sunrise spot

Many a famous film have been shot in Sicily, Italy including ‘The Godfather’, ‘The Talented Mr Ripley’, and ‘Indiana Jones’, but no location caught my eye quite like this one. Wake up to the sunrise in Scopello, majestically captured by @neil.james, a town on the Italian island that was featured in the movie ‘Ocean’s Twelve’.

sunset spot

You didn’t think I’d end this without featuring at least one ‘Star Wars’ location did you? Probably the most famous sunset spot in the whole galaxy is the Lars Homestead - or Luke Skywalker’s home. This real-life place is outside of Nefta in Tunisia, and it’s a perfect visit for fans of the franchise as it has multiple locations featured in the movies. Can’t guarantee twin suns setting, though.

blame it on the moon

We may only have the one moon, and not nine like Endor, but our next full moon will take place on 23rd May in the sign of Sagittarius, this date may differ depending on where you are in the world. Also, remember that you can sometimes see magnificent moonrises on the days on either side of this - so head somewhere east-facing and conjure up the weather gods to give you cloudless skies. This website can help you plan based on your location.

Until next time, happy movie themed sky chasing
