did you see the lights?

the sky surprises the world once more

the world stops for solar show

Unless you live under a rock you’ll no doubt have come across the incredible colourful aurora show that graced multiple countries in the north and south of the globe. Perhaps you were lucky enough to see it in person, or like me you missed out - either due to location or, as in my case, too much cloud cover. A geomagnetic storm of this strength hadn’t been seen in two decades, which is why it caught the world’s attention.

In this edition of ‘The Sunrise Chaser’ we’ll celebrate this magical event and look to some of the best places on earth to experience the northern or southern lights.

predicting tip

Here is where I’ll share an additional or new tip to help with your sunrise and sunset chasing.

For star gazing, and auroras spotting, you need a clear sky. Clouds get in the way and obsure your view. As you’ll likely know by now, sunrises and sunsets are better with the right type of clouds.

The sublime pastel stylings of @emilie.hofferber provide the perfect vision of the lights. Taken from Grand Teton Nation Park in Wyoming, USA, this collection of images and videos showcases Earth’s majesty.

where to visit?

The Nordic countries are prime locations for seeing the Northern Lights. Whilst most people think of Finland or Iceland, Norway also has a spectacular record of stunning aurora viewing spots including in the far north of the country in Tromsø. Here Marjut from The Smooth Escape notes how this town, coined the Captial of the Arctic, provides an excellent base for viewing the spectacular sky show.

out the window

Whenever I travel somewhere I am often looking for places to stay that have a unique or mind-blowing view.

With a not to be sniffed at entry price tag of $75,000USD a three-night all-inclusive stay at Sheldon Chalet in Alaska, USA’s Denali National Park and Preserve includes helicopter transportation, flightseeing tours, a world-class food offering and all the gear you need for exploring. Who wants to fund my visit?! 😆

When the excitement about the Auroras was going on this app was recommended by many as a great source of information for how accurate it is for the auroras. Glendale is free to use and also provides helpful hints on viewing them.

Sunrise and sunset spots from around the world I’m desperate to visit. Drop me an email (reply to this) to share your favourites for the chance to be featured. This is also a great way for me to highlight other wonderful creators you may want to follow. For one edition only we’ll be showing some aurora viewing locations

The state of Tasmania is widely considered to be the best part of Australia to view the Southern Lights or as they’re also known Aurora Australis. Check out Mount Amos in the main island’s east region for possible views like the one below.

Everyone knows Lapland for Santa Claus, but it is also home to the Northern Lights or the Aurora Borealis. Photographer and videographer Jarcce captured a sensational view from Ranua in Finland which showcases the sky over a winter wonderland.

blame it on the moon

Just like the northern or southern lights, a clear sky is optimal for viewing the moon. The next full moon happens next week on 23rd May. It appears in the sign of Sagittarius, and the date may differ slightly depending on where you are in the world. This website helps you plan based on your location.

Until next time, happy lights chasing
