a visit to the land of fire and ice will do that

(ice) bucket list

Dive into the allure of the dedicated country series, where the spotlight shifts to illuminate the awe-inspiring landscapes of Iceland.

This year, the nation made headlines with not one but two volcanic eruptions, but aside from that there is a unique tapestry of wonders to enjoy – from thundering waterfalls to volcanic beaches, icy lagoons to the geological ballet of tectonic plates.

And, as this is ‘The Sunrise Chaser’ let's not forget the showstopping sunrises and sunsets that paint the skies in magical hues. Join me as I recount just some of my two-week exploration of the famed Ring Road this summer. What you're about to discover is just a glimpse into the extraordinary places, aimed at igniting your wanderlust for a future Icelandic escapade.

predicting tip

Here is where I’ll share an additional or new tip to help with your sunrise and sunset chasing.

Everywhere in the world will have different lengths of sunrise/sunset at different times of the year. For example in Iceland during June, the longest days of the year, the sunsets last hours. Check an app like Clear Outside and set to your current (or future) location for specific conditions.

sky of the fortnight

Breaking away from the norm, as this edition is all about the enchanting skies of Iceland I won’t share a recent highlight of mine. Instead, I'm treating you to a breathtaking video by one of the top Icelandic creators, Asa Steinars. Asa's lens has a magical way of encapsulating the country's beauty, and those pastel sunrise hues in the sky featured in the video below are nothing short of mesmerising.

where to visit?

North Iceland stole my heart, and a recent addition to the area has taken the spotlight—the Arctic Coastway. Imagine 900 kilometres of coastal roads, a serene dance close to the Arctic Circle, unveiling hidden treasures away from the main Ring Road. Divided into three distinctive 'coasts'—immerse yourself in the captivating tales of 'Sagas and Mythology,' the rich heritage of 'Fishing Towns and Heritage,' and the untamed beauty of 'Elemental Nature.'

out the window

Whenever I travel somewhere I am often looking for places to stay that have a unique or mind-blowing view.

Dreams almost became reality as I spent a night in one of Iceland's coveted see-through lodges—the Panorama Glass Lodge in the West Iceland location. Imagine a Nordic-themed bed, sunset views for hours (conditions pending), a blissful sauna, and a hot tub amidst a rugged landscape. Despite my experience of a sky cloaked in consistent grey, manage your expectations right and this turns into a true treat, one I wholeheartedly recommend. It wasn’t quite the experience I had in mind, but it was still a lovely visit - the rundown of my 19 hours housed here is below.

bucket list

Sunrise and sunset spots from around the world I’m desperate to visit. Drop me an email (reply to this) to share your favourites for the chance to be featured. This is also a great way for me to highlight other wonderful creators you may want to follow.

In this special edition, I'm unveiling a hidden gem in the country that slipped through my fingers—an irresistible invitation to plan your return - plus my favourite spot to watch the sun passing the horizon.

sunrise spot

Unforgiving weather held me back from experiencing the marvel below, but under the right conditions, Hvítserkur emerges as an absolute must-stop. Just a short drive from the main ring road, this destination promises a wonder worth the wait.

sunset spot

A defining moment in my drive through the land of fire and ice came alive under the perpetual glow of the midnight sun at Arctic Henge. Perched on the outskirts of Raufarhöfn, this seemingly medieval marvel, actually a product of the 1990s, transforms into a captivating spectacle as the sun sets, turning the horizon into a masterpiece of vibrant colours.

blame it on the moon

The first full moon of 2024 will be on 25th January (depending on where you are located, specific details can be found here). Appearing in the boastful sign of Leo, this will no doubt be a spectacle to look out for with the right conditions.

That signs off my last edition for 2023 and a recap of some of the greatest aspects of Iceland - one of the best places you’ll ever visit. I hope this has given you some inspo for a trip in 2024 or beyond, but until then…here’s to more gorgeous skies in the new year.

Happy sky chasing.
